Walkabout Barber coming to the New England

Community Cuts, Connection & Conversation

Walkabout Barber is the first of its kind and is a mobile Barber and Trauma and Recovery service designed to provide a space for cuts, connections and real conversations to take place.

Brian Dowd is one of the most sought after “Indigenous Trauma & Recovery Specialists” in Australia with over 16 years experience in the social, emotional and well-being space. Brian currently holds a post graduate degree in Indigenous Trauma & Recovery and is one in only 42 people in the country to hold such a qualification.

Since Brian's son was diagnosed with autism in 2017, Brian found that due to his son’s sensory issues, cutting his hair was not just difficult, but traumatic for his son and family alike. Instead of putting it in the too-hard basket, Brian opened up his own barber shop in Newcastle and most recently Coonabarabran to desensitise his son's fear of haircuts; in doing so, opened up a space for others dealing with similar concerns to do the same.

Walkabout Barber will give our men and youth the opportunity to sit in a chair, receive a fresh cut, connect with their barber and open up conversation to do with healing, hope and happiness.

Walkabout Barber is offering to remote, rural and urban communities the opportunity to engage with us and our team, to visit your community and provide barbering services from 9am – 4:30pm and a Trauma & Recovery workshop with Brian Dowd and his award winning tools.

Check out our events page to find out when Walkabout Barber is near you. Walkabout Barber will be looking at suitable dates for the Easter Holidays and will be coming to Ashford, Tenterfield and Glen Innes during the Easter school holidays between 13-28 April 2019.
